Zonkers (pairs) #4

$2.95

It is hard to beat rabbit fur for movement under water. The "Zonker" style effectively uses rabbit to create a minnow profile. The one caveat to rabbit strips is the difficulty in getting it thoroughly wet. If this fly is just tied on and submerged, you could troll it for an hour and still have air trapped at the base of the hair fibers. This style fly has to be "swished" back and forth in the water to displace the air with water. You might have to open the hair with your fingers to get it soaked through. Once rabbit is wet it is unsurpassed for flowing material and movement.

Additional Info

The “ZONKER” style dates back 40 years or more. As a casting streamer is is well regarded on larger rivers. As a trolling fly it is terrific. The flowing movement once it is “soaked to the skin” catches fish. White is the most popular color as a minnow imitation in deep water lakes. It is particularly effective in lakes with pond smelt as the baitfish. The Light Gray is difficult to distinguish in these photos from the white but it is a subtle up grade as a minnow. The Blue is also a deep water color scheme. The Olive is a top choice for shallow weedy water where matches the bottom color.
