KOKANEE TROLLING FLIES
My Kokanee Trolling Flies are based on a 1980s steelhead pattern known as a Krystal Bullet. I downsized it onto a lighter wire hook and added a trailing treble hook. The trailing treble makes this fly a more reliable fish catcher due to the notoriously soft mouths that kokanee have. Five of the seven flies offered are fluorescent. It is widely believed that kokanee are attracted to or can better see colors that fluoresce in the presence of ultra violet light. I have caught kokanee on all of these colors at one time or another. Kokanee are notable for their color selectivity which can change through the course of a day. My recommendation is to purchase multiple colors rather than just your single favorite. Being able to change colors can be key to a successful day on the water.
These flies are tied with fluorescent chenille that has flecks of mylar woven in to reflect light. The wing and tail material is a light reflecting twisted mylar in a color that compliments the body color. When illuminated with UV Light these flies are very "HOT". The rear treble is attached with a loop of stainless steel leader wire that creates an articulated fly that the fish find difficult to throw. The single front hook is size #8 and the trailing treble is size #10.
The "Fire Red" and the "PURPLE" are tied with silver core chenille that has a hint of flash at the center of the body. Purple is a color that remains visible at depth and it is accented with UV Purple Flash in the wing and tail.. Red is one of the first colors to be filtered out by the water. It turns gray black at depth but the UV Orange mylar wing and tail continue to reflect available light. The rear treble is attached with a loop of stainless steel leader wire that creates an articulated fly that the fish find difficult to throw. The single front hook is size #8 and the trailing treble is size #10.
